Are you looking for a way to make sure the security of your website protects not only you but also your viewers? Well here at Connection Incorporated, our team of experts has listed below the importance of HTTPS and how to get it on your website.
What Is HTTPS?
This acronym stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure and is an internet code that ensures protection and authenticity of the data on the user’s device and your company’s website. HTTPS is also referred to as SSL, which stands for Secure Sockets Layers. SSL automatically encrypts the data of the information being shared on your website to ensure that it is constantly protected.
Having this feature is especially important if you are collecting personal information on your websites, such as email addresses, credit card, and social security information, or passwords. This encryption prevents computer hackers from accessing these personal details and selling it to third party members.
To ensure you and your viewers are protected and the information is secured, implement HTTPS on your website today!
How To Get HTTPS On Your Website
Setting up HTTPS on your business website is a simple process that can be done in five steps.
The first step is to create a dedicated IP address. This will make sure the traffic on the dedicated IP address only goes directly to your business page and does not get pulled up by any other sites. This can be purchased for as low as $3.50/month on Stable Host, or $2.50/ month on Scarlet’s Web.
Once you have your dedicated IP address you will need to create an SSL certificate. This verifies your website by confirming that you are who you say you are. You can purchase a yearly subscription for an SSL certificate on GoDaddy.com, or any other SSL certificate sites.
After you purchase your certificate, you need to activate it. Some web hosts may activate this for you, but if that is not the case, you can simply go to your host control panel and click the generate an SSL certificate option. Here you will fill out all the pertinent information for your website.
The fourth step is to install this certificate after it has been generated on your web host control panel. You can do this just by copying the certificate and pasting the information into the “Install an SSL Certificate” section, then clicking submit.
The final step is to update all the sensitive pages on your website. Meaning you should update your HTTPS only on the pages that require sensitive information, such as passwords, emails, and credit card details. Once you do this, you and your viewers will officially be protected.
For SEO purposes, we recommend migrating your entire website from HTTP to HTTPS and properly setting up a redirect so only the HTTPS version of your website is accessible. This is much easier than it sounds and can be accomplished by adding an access file via your hosting account.
Get Started
Now that you know how to update your website to HTTPS, it’s time to get started. This secure code protects your website by encrypting all sensitive data and gives users peace of mind knowing that their information will not be sent to unauthorized sources. Also, converting your website to an HTTPS can help improve your rankings on Google.
