Have you heard about Apple’s recent iOS 13 software update and one of its newest features that spells trouble for Robocall users?
Robocalls are phone calls that come through a computerized autodialer. They deliver pre-recorded messages to their recipients. Initially, this type of call was used for emergency and public-service announcements. However, telemarketers have jumped on the bandwagon and have been using robocalling to spam smartphones around the world. It can be frustrating for smartphone users to have to deal with silencing what can sometimes feel like an endless stream of automated calls and messages and Apple has finally come up with a solution.
At a recent Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple revealed some of the new features in their update, one of which targets and blocks those frequent scam and spam calls that so many of us are now used to. The way it works is through a setting that, when turned on, only allows numbers that it recognizes from your contacts, messages, and email. Calls outside of this group will be immediately sent to voicemail. Unless the caller leaves a voicemail, the user won’t be notified of the call. When a voicemail is left, Apple generates a transcript for users to review, so they can then decide if they want to call the number back.
With the growing frustration around unsolicited robocalls and spam calls, many people cringe when their phones ring. Records have shown that, in the U.S. alone, there were 26 billion robocalls made in 2018!
In October of last year, Google introduced its own robocall blocking feature to its proprietary Pixel phones. There have also been a variety of third-party apps released over the last year that claim to block spam and robocalls. The issue with these applications is that they are not very robust, don’t work well, and/or you are inundated with their advertisements for using their “free” apps.
While the newest Apple feature has felt like an answer to many people’s prayers, some feel that this new feature is too aggressive of a solution. What happens to the calls from people you know who are just using a payphone or alternate number to try to get ahold of you? After all, not every unknown call is a spammer or robocall. Others feel this solution doesn’t completely alleviate the issue because they are still having to remove the voicemails from their phones.
Another important question concerning this update – what does this mean for businesses who use ringless voicemails to correspond with clients and potential leads?
Connected CRM
